Alliance Francaise - Film Series presents "Balzac & the little Chinese Seamstress"

It is 1971 in Maoist China when two young men, Ma (Ye Liu) and Luo (Kun Chen), are sent from their reactionary families to a work camp in a peasant mining village to reeducate them in the Communist tradition and to purge them of their Western influences. Despite the hard labor they must endure, both men become enraptured with the beautiful, illiterate granddaughter of the local tailor. Intercepting a cache of forbidden Western books, namely the works of Honore de Balzac, Ma and Luo befriend the little seamstress, igniting a friendship by which all three, and soon the whole community, learn to expand their world views through the power of literature, music, and art.

No Registration. Alliance Francaise and IFP/Chicago members: Free;
Others: $5 suggested donation.

Kinship & Community
Field Museum Cultural Connections Series

Filipino American Historical Society of Chicago and Indo-American Heritage Museum

Strong human bonds are often formed through rituals or ceremonies that solidify community ties and help people meet the challenges of everyday life. For many immigrants from India, the centuries-old tradition of raksha bandhan renews ties of kinship and reciprocity, reminding them of responsibility for the other’s well-being. Filipino immigrants unite around annual public ceremonies honoring national hero José Rizal, reaffirming their commitment to his ideals and their land of origin. Join us to see how intimate family occasions and large public events perform vital roles in creating community among these immigrant groups.
