Brief history:
Surrounded by the South China Sea, the Pacific Ocean, and Sula Sea more than 7,000 islands make up the Philippines. The majority of population live on 11 of the islands. The country was a former Spanish colony and was named after a 16th century Spanish king. Also, once ruled by the United States, the Philippines gained its independence in 1935.
