Brief History
Located in Central Europe, Poland is east of Germany and was established mid-10th century. Between 1772 and 1795 Russia, Prussia, and Austria divided and ruled Poland. Poland gained its independence in 1918 but suffered during World War II when Germany invaded the country and several million people died, most of them Jews. The Soviet Union removed the Germans and in 1947 Poland became a Communist People's Republic. In May 2004, Poland became an EU member, 15 years after the end of Communist rule.
